
Back in London: The Best Croissant Competition returns to Great Britain!
8 October 2024On September 26, 2024, the excellence of Isigny Sainte-Mère crossed the Channel to London for the final of the prestigious Isigny Sainte-Mère Best Butter Croissant Competition. After weeks of crisp competition, 20 English bakeries had the chance to present their finest creations at the famous Savoy Hotel, a symbol of English elegance, “so british”! An event not to be missed, celebrating both British craftsmanship and the incomparable quality of Isigny Sainte-Mère’s special tourage butter, for which our English neighbors are famous.
55 bakeries in the running, only one winner!
It all began with a popular vote, where every croissant lover could elect his or her favorite online. The 20 finalists, who received the most votes, then took up the ultimate challenge: to seduce a prestigious jury with their croissants, crispy on the outside and tenderly soft on the inside. Thanks to Isigny Sainte-Mère’s puff pastry butter, these pastries revealed all their finesse, gourmandise and lightness, indispensable elements for a competition croissant worthy of the name.
An exceptional jury for a memorable tasting
Under the expert eye of Cyrille Van Der Stuyft, sponsor of the competition and Meilleur Ouvrier de France, the judges tasted the croissants carefully. And for an exceptional competition, an exceptional jury was needed:
- Benoit Blin – Head Pastry Chef at Manoir aux Quat’Saisons (2-star Michelin star restaurant)
- Gilles Quillot – Chef at the French Embassy in the UK
- Nicola Lamb – Pastry Chef and author of the Best Seller book “SIFT
- Matt Adlard – Pastry Chef, author.
- Clément Vaugrenard – Chef Boulanger, consultant & bakery manager “Cakes & Layers” bakery in London
- Jennifer Earle – Podcaster & food tour guide
- Sally Abbe – Chef at Michelin-starred The Pem Restaurant
After deliberation, Chestnut Bakery was finally crowned the overall winner, in front of 150 guests gathered for the occasion. “God save the Croissant!”
